  • This home was owned by Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia and was the last home he owned until his death in 1995.
This Stunning Residence is regarded as one of the true jewels of Nicasio, if not all Marin.  Its location offers 300° views including Mt. Tam, to the Berkeley Skyline and gazes west toward the Pacific ocean.  This 7,000+ square foot Mediterranean Style home sits on 11 acres and when you arrive onto its long driveway with circular lead around an island of twin palm trees, you instantly feel as though you’ve entered onto a fabulous private villa in the Mediterranean countryside.
This home has some local history as well as it belonged the beloved legendary guitarist for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia.  It was the home he owned at the time of his death in 1995. Many aspects of the home that he added are still present.  The current owner, who is close to remaining members of the Grateful Dead, has discovered many interesting stories that surround the time Jerry lived here.

Along with the stunning architecture and overall design of the house itself, the grounds boast impeccable landscaping.  Its rolling lawns, along with mature palm trees mix spectacularly with the surrounding native forest. Its 73,000-gallon swimming pool and enormous spa are complemented by palms, lawns, and rose gardens adjoining a spacious sun drenched patio area beneath sunlit skies during the day and moonlit skies at night. 

Once on the property, one finds that it is completely self-sufficient for weeks at a time. The Property comes with the deepest well on the ranch and has its own water treatment facility servicing both the home and the irrigation respectively. In addition, the large Olympia hidden generator supplies power automatically if and when needed. The generator is supplied with its own 450-gallon propane tank. The house is supplied with propane from two 900-gallon propane tanks. A modest vegetable garden is conveniently but not conspicuously located near the main house.

Once inside the home, one immediately takes in the spacious grandeur of its character.  Each room boasts high ceilings and wonderful light. The marble entry hall is especially remarkable as it greets friends, family and guests with warmth and grace. The eye falls flawlessly onto a grand staircase leading to the stars. To the right lies a cozy den for private reading and relaxation and just a bit further is a formal living room with wood-burning fireplace and large framed windows facing west that deliver majestic views. The other side of the living room offers spacious doors that open directly to the patio and pool.

To the left of the entry is a magnificent dining room separated from but easily accessible to the gourmet kitchen.  The Fortuni chandelier over the dining room table along with matching sconces serves to remind each guest of the elegance of the gathering at the table.

The gourmet kitchen is a chef’s dream space offering double over and under ovens, built-in microwave, eight burner stove top, center console with built-in trash compactor, dishwasher, full sized Sub-Zero Refrigerator and full-sized Sub-Zero Freezer. The cabinet space is so abundant that it is hard to fill. The kitchen offers a large framed windows to the patio and pool creating an intimate connection to grounds. The dark marble counter tops wrap around the entire area and a raised marble tabletop at one end beckons guests to sit in high stools and engage in conversation while the meal is being prepared. A perfect little breakfast area with views to the patio and pool complement this area of the home.

In following the impeccable flow of the house, the next room is undoubtedly the family room complete with Wood-burning fireplace, entertainment center with ’ Stewart movie screen, installed by Jerry Garcia. Four patio doors are opened on warm summer nights to ensure solidarity with the grounds. A full service wet bar complete with small refrigerator, wine rack, wine cooling refrigerator and copper sink complement this pent ultimate gathering center of the house. 

The next significant room on the downstairs level includes an au pair unit with its own entrance, full bath, and walk-in closet. A stunning built-in mahogany book shelf and cabinet allows this room to become a perfect setting for the CEO needing to feel at home in his office.

The downstairs of this home offers a full utility room for laundry with laundry chute from the upstairs area, stainless steel sink, alternate water faucet, and spacious storage areas.

Upstairs
Ascending the grand staircase to the upstairs area confirms the sense of regal status as it climbs to the upper living area.  Atop the upper landing the high views to the front property and island palms become the focal point. Turning left takes you to a spacious recreation room with doors leading out to a paver deck overlooking a breathtaking valley and the Nicasio hillsides to the West. Often, on cool spring mornings, this home sits in the sunlight while a white finger of fog hangs in the valley below reminding one of Ireland or Scotland. This room is perfect as a gymnasium, office or playroom for kids. Returning past the Grand Staircase toward the center of the upstairs takes you to the bedrooms. 

Master Suite
The Master Suite is elegantly appointed with dark teak flooring, wood-burning fireplace, Fortuni chandelier, four door access to a paver deck overlooking the pool and back patio offering views to the East and South. This elegant sleeping area has two entrances. The Master Bath brings together function and form with his and hers sinks marble tops Elgin fixtures, and ample mirrors. Further in are private toilet and bidet with telephone accessibility. The master also offers full length glass enclosed Sauna with one-way glass enclosure to the outside grounds. The walk-in marble shower is also fully enclosed and contains two facing shower heads enclosed in a marble finish and with length size bench. The water pressure would make a power washer jealous. The Master Closet is a room in and of itself. One would be hard pressed to fill this closet and itis a room that has to be seen to understand how true that is.

Nursery Suite
Attached to the Master is the Nursery Suite and perfectly situated for the new loving mother and father as it is only steps away. Complete with full bath and walk-in closet, this room can become more than a nursery as the years go by.

Secondary Master
Contrary to some homes, a secondary Master Suite exists across the hall from the Nursery Suite.  This light-filled room offers a turret view of the valleys below. A semi-circlular bench adjoins the windows for afternoon repose. A full private bath and toilet adjoin the private sink and cabinet area.  An impeccable walk-in closet completes this space.
